The River
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The River is an album by the Malian singer and guitarist Ali Farka Touré. It was released in January 1990 on the British label World Circuit, with Mango Records handling international distribution. Philippe Bertrand and Nick Gold produced the record. It was recorded at Studio Bolibana in Paris and at Cold Storage Studios and Garden Studios in London. Touré plays electric and acoustic guitar and the njarka, a single-string instrument. Amadou Cisse plays calabash and percussion.
The album is blues with a Malian foundation, supplemented by guest musicians. Rory McLeod plays harmonica and Steve Williamson tenor saxophone, and on "Kenouna" Seane Keane and Kevin Conneff play fiddle and bodhran. Robert Christgau gave the record an A-minus in The Village Voice and praised its uncompromising variety. The River was released in the same year as African Blues and was followed in 1993 by The Source.
