Illadelph Halflife
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Illadelph Halflife is the third studio album by the American hip hop band the Roots, released on 24 September 1996 on DGC and Geffen. It sounds harder and broader than its predecessor Do You Want More?!!!??! and features programmed drums. The guests come from R&B, such as Amel Larrieux and D'Angelo, and from jazz, such as David Murray, Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson and Graham Haynes.
The New York Times called it one of the best rap records of the year, with lyrics that also deal with Bosnia, the Olympic Games and terrorism. Rolling Stone later wrote that the messages gained more focus, with sharp criticism of gangsta rap and lyrics by Black Thought about loyalty and responsibility. The Source included the album in a list of the hundred best rap albums in 1998. The multitracks were lost in a fire in 2008; the original master tape remained intact.
