Contours

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Contours is saxophonist Sam Rivers's second album for Blue Note. He recorded it in 1965, and it was released on the label afterwards. Rivers plays tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone and flute. He works with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Joe Chambers. He wrote all four pieces himself.

According to an AllMusic reviewer, Rivers embraced the avant-garde here, but presented it in a way that would not frighten or confuse lovers of hard bop. The same reviewer called the record rarely less than fascinating and one of the high points of the avant-garde in the mid-sixties. The CD reissue includes a second take of Mellifluous Cacophony as a bonus.

Listening tip. Listen to Euterpe and notice how the soloists give each other room in a piece that sounds free yet keeps a clear line.
