Crystals

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Crystals was released in September 1974 on Impulse! in stereo and quadraphonic. Sam Rivers wrote the pieces between 1959 and 1972 and finished them as new elements arose that brought them together conceptually. Earlier, Ornette Coleman with his Free Jazz Double Quartet and John Coltrane with Ascension had already deployed large line-ups, and the Jazz Composers' Orchestra Association had existed for a few years.

Recording took five or six hours. The line-up is sometimes put at fourteen musicians: three trumpets, two trombones, tuba, five reed players, bass and two drummers. Rivers plays saxophone and conducts. After a few years the record could no longer be obtained, and it was released on CD in 2002. The critic Thom Jurek heard in it the mature Rivers as composer, improviser and thinker.

Listening tip. Listen to Exultation and notice how the large ensemble sounds as a whole, while the individual horns remain audible.
