A New Conception
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
A New Conception is the third album by the American saxophonist Sam Rivers. He recorded it in 1966 for Blue Note, with Hal Galper on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass and Steve Ellington on drums. Rivers plays tenor and soprano saxophone and flute.
The album consists of seven jazz standards, such as When I Fall in Love, Detour Ahead and Secret Love. The saxophonist gives these familiar songs a new shape in his own arrangements. AllMusic called the music challenging but accessible, because familiar themes are rearranged in surprising ways. The reviewer praised the skill in the arrangements and felt that Rivers's talent was unjustly underrated.
