Country Life

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Country Life is Roxy Music's fourth album and was released on 15 November 1974. Bryan Ferry took the title from a British magazine about country living. With this album the band entered the American top forty for the first time. The single All I Want Is You reached number twelve in Britain.

Opener The Thrill of It All is a fast rocker. Eddie Jobson's violin dominates Out of the Blue, which became a favourite on stage. In Bitter-Sweet a German oompah can be heard, Triptych has an Elizabethan feel and If It Takes All Night leans on boogie and blues. Casanova was acclaimed as a more cynical and harder song. The cover with two scantily clad women was censored in, among other places, the United States and Spain. Many critics see this as one of the group's most refined and consistent records.

Listening

Listening tip. In Out of the Blue, listen to Eddie Jobson's violin, which dominates the song, and notice how the flanging effect colours the sound.
