Bitter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Bitter is Meshell Ndegeocello's third album and was released on 24 August 1999 on Maverick Records. Craig Street produced it, and it was recorded at Mad Dog Studios in Burbank. Besides her own vocals and bass guitar, Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin, among others, play on it, there is a string quartet, and David Torn and Doyle Bramhall II play guitar. There is also a song by Jimi Hendrix on it, May This Be Love.

The reviews varied widely. Billboard wrote of a modern masterpiece, and Vibe called it album of the year. The New York Times saw rhythms guided by her bass playing, with guitars, strings and her restrained singing interlocking like brain waves. Others were less enthusiastic: the Chicago Tribune heard a bittersweet sadness, and the Hartford Courant found it dull. On the Billboard 200 the album reached number 105.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to May This Be Love and notice how the bass carries the tempo and the mood. Can you hear how restrained the vocals remain?
