Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape is Meshell Ndegeocello's fourth album and was released on 4 June 2002 on Maverick Records. Her third album, Bitter, sold poorly, and the record company now wanted a record that sounded more like a black record. She worked with, among others, Talib Kweli, Missy Elliott and Tweet, and with her own band, the Conscientious Objectors. Recording in the summer of 2001 took about a month, at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco. She took the mixtapes of her youth as her model.
The album blends hip hop, funk, soul, jazz and go-go. Between the tracks are excerpts from speeches by Angela Davis and Gil Scott-Heron. The lyrics deal with consumption, revolution, religion and love between women. Because of lyrics that were linked to 9/11, the release was postponed several times. Critics were very positive, and the album received a Grammy nomination.
