Stranded

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Stranded was released in 1973 as Roxy Music's third album. It was the first record without synthesizer player Brian Eno, who had been replaced by Eddie Jobson. For the first time Bryan Ferry was not the only writer: Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera also supplied songs. Chris Thomas produced. The cover shows the model Marilyn Cole, styled as someone stranded in the jungle.

The band sounded somewhat more straightforward, with more piano and heavy guitars. Even so, the music sometimes remained unsettled, AllMusic later wrote. The record topped the British album chart, and Street Life reached number nine on the singles chart. In 1974 Rolling Stone felt that Americans could no longer ignore Roxy Music. Eno himself later called it one of his favourite albums by the group.

Listening

Listening tip. In Street Life, listen to the guitars and keyboards beneath Ferry's vocals, and notice how full and tight the sound is.
