For Your Pleasure

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

For Your Pleasure · Bryan Ferry studied under the pop art painter Richard Hamilton, and you can hear it in the way he put his second album together: as a collage of ideas that clash or else blend. He wrote most of it in two weeks at the beginning of 1973. The band recorded it in February at AIR Studios in London and produced it themselves, with help from Chris Thomas. It was the last album with synthesizer player Brian Eno.

The production is more elaborate than on the debut. In Every Dream Home a Heartache, a sinister ode to an inflatable doll, fades away and returns with all the instruments in a strong phasing effect. The Bogus Man revolves around a metronome-like rhythm and an atonal saxophone. The album reached number four on the British chart, received good reviews and is regarded as one of the best glam rock albums. The cover with Amanda Lear and a black panther became just as famous.

Listening

Listening tip. In In Every Dream Home a Heartache, listen to the ending, where the song fades away and then returns with a strong phasing effect on all the instruments.
