Romantic Warrior

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Romantic Warrior was the first album that Return to Forever recorded for Columbia Records, after four records on Polydor. In February 1976 the group retreated to Caribou Ranch near Nederland in Colorado. It was also the first record on which the credit featuring Chick Corea disappeared from beside the band's name. Some see the album as Corea's answer to a successful record by Rick Wakeman, because of its medieval themes and the influence of progressive rock.

Corea wrote the longest pieces; the other members each wrote one track. Medieval Overture sets the mood. Lenny White's Sorceress begins with a funky riff, Al Di Meola's Majestic Dance leans on rock riffs and a distorted guitar, and Stanley Clarke's The Magician is complex and playful. It became the group's most popular album, and afterwards Corea decided that the time of this line-up was over.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant (Part I & II) and notice Chick Corea's intense keyboard solo.
