Freaky Styley

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Freaky Styley was released on 16 August 1985 on EMI America. It was the second album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the first studio album with Hillel Slovak, who had returned to the band after Jack Sherman was fired. After the bad experience with Andy Gill, the group was keen to work with George Clinton of Parliament and Funkadelic. Clinton agreed and first had the band spend a month with him before recording began. The record was made at United Sound Studios in Detroit, and the chemistry with Clinton was good.

The music draws on funk, punk rock and psychedelic rock, and the lyrics deal with the band members' lives in Hollywood. Jungle Man and Hollywood (Africa) were released as promotional singles, and videos were made for Catholic School Girls Rule and Jungle Man. Critics saw it as an improvement on the debut and praised the experimentation and the production. It was the last album with drummer Cliff Martinez.
