The Red Hot Chili Peppers

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Red Hot Chili Peppers · This debut album was released on 10 August 1984 on EMI America and Enigma Records. Guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons had left, so singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea brought in Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez. Sherman plays only on this record. The producer was Andy Gill, guitarist of Gang of Four.

The recording was uneasy. Kiedis and Flea were often at odds with Gill over the direction and found the result less raw than their 1983 demo. Kiedis was particularly hurt when he saw that Gill had written that Police Helicopter was bad. On Mommy Where's Daddy, Gwen Dickey, the singer of Rose Royce, sings along. The reviews were mixed. Even so, the record got airplay on college radio and on MTV, and it built the band's audience. Flea later said that he liked the songs but regretted the way they were recorded.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Police Helicopter and notice the stuttering, angular tempo that Kiedis later described as a burst of energy.
