Cliff Martinez

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cliff Martinez was a drummer with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After that he began writing film music, mainly for Steven Soderbergh, starting with Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989). His music is ambient: soft, long-held sounds and small, repeated patterns. For Solaris (2002) he used, among other things, the Cristal Baschet, a glass instrument played with wet fingers, alongside steel drums and synthesizers. For Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive (2011) he wrote a cool, electronic score that fits the synth-pop songs in the film. That film made his name with a younger generation. After that he worked with Refn again on Only God Forgives (2013).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the soft, glittering washes of sound and the small motifs that slowly circle round without a real melody.
