Synthwave-revival
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Synthwave-revival · Around 2010, musicians reached back to the synthesizer sound of the 1980s, with soft washes of sound, arpeggios and drum machines. Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive (2011) brought that style to the cinema with a score by Cliff Martinez, former drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, supplemented with songs by Kavinsky and College, among others. Disasterpeace, who had previously made music for games, wrote a hard synthesizer score for the horror film It Follows (2014) in the spirit of John Carpenter. Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the band S U R V I V E made the title music for the series Stranger Things (2016). Nostalgia and a warm, analogue sound are characteristic.
