S U R V I V E
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
S U R V I V E, also written as Survive, is an American electronic band from Austin, Texas, founded in 2009. The members are Kyle Dixon, Michael Stein, Adam Jones and Mark Donica. Dixon and Stein compose and produce as a duo. The band makes synthesizer-heavy music influenced by horror film scores, with drum machines and analogue synthesizers.
Music and breakthrough
The name became widely known when Dixon and Stein wrote the music for the Netflix series Stranger Things. The two volumes of the soundtrack, Music of Stranger Things, were each nominated for a Grammy in 2017, but did not win. In September 2017 they did receive an Emmy for the series' title music. Earlier the band had already contributed to the soundtrack of the horror film The Guest. In 2017 they also put together the music for Sensory, a restaurant experience at the Sugar Hill Mountain festival in Melbourne.
Influence
The band's own records carry cryptic titles, such as LT019 and s000 from 2011, HD009 and mnq026 from 2012 and RR7349 in 2016. The music evokes the 1980s, with pulsing bass lines and cool melodies. In this way the band showed that analogue synthesizers could reach a broad audience in the twenty-first century too.
