News of the World · After their 1977 tour, Queen went into the studio in July for their sixth album, with Mike Stone as co-producer. Only two months had been booked at Sarm East and Wessex Sound Studios in London; the previous record had taken five months. At Wessex the Sex Pistols were also working on their album. Punk had attacked progressive rock groups, and the band responded with a simpler, more rootsy sound, as Brian May put it.

We Will Rock You is deliberately kept simple: stomp, stomp, clap, so that the audience could join in. We Are the Champions became the first single and reached number 2 in the United Kingdom. Sheer Heart Attack is punk rock, Sleeping On The Sidewalk blues rock and Get Down, Make Love funk. The reactions were mixed at first. The album reached number 4 in the United Kingdom and number 3 in the United States.
