A Day at the Races

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Day at the Races · After an exhausting tour for A Night at the Opera, Queen withdrew in the summer of 1976 to make a new album. It was recorded at The Manor, Sarm East and Wessex Sound Studios, for the first time without producer Roy Thomas Baker. The band produced it themselves, with Mike Stone as engineer. The title, like that of the previous record, refers to a Marx Brothers film.

The music is varied. Tie Your Mother Down is blues rock with a slide solo by Brian May. The Millionaire Waltz changes key and time signature, with striking bass work by John Deacon. In Somebody to Love, Freddie Mercury, May and Roger Taylor had their voices recorded over one another so many times that it sounds like a gospel choir of a hundred singers. That track became the biggest hit of the record. In the United Kingdom, Japan and the Netherlands the album topped the charts.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Somebody to Love and notice the choir in the choruses: that is just three singers, recorded again and again. Hear how their voices together become one great gospel choir.
