A Night at the Opera
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
A Night at the Opera · In 1975 Queen were practically broke, because a contract with Trident left almost all the money they earned with others. That frustration led to Death on Two Legs. After a conflict lasting months the group got free and signed with EMI and Elektra. With producer Roy Thomas Baker the record was made in four months at seven studios, reportedly the most expensive record up to that time.
The production is richly layered, with many stacked voices and guitars. The songs draw on ballads, music hall, sea shanties, Dixieland, hard rock and prog rock, and besides the usual instruments a double bass, harp and ukulele are heard. Bohemian Rhapsody, almost twice as long as an average single of the day, became the first number one in the United Kingdom. The reviews were positive, and the record made the band world-famous.
