Wisdom Through Music

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wisdom Through Music by the saxophonist Pharoah Sanders was released in 1973 on Impulse! Records. It was recorded in New York and Los Angeles and produced by the drummer Lee Young, the younger brother of the saxophonist Lester Young. Also playing on the record are flautist James Branch, pianist Joe Bonner, bassist Cecil McBee, drummer Norman Connors and three percussionists.

AllMusic praises the exuberance of High Life, the raw and soulful Love Is Everywhere and the festive joy of Selflessness. Other critics are more critical. According to All About Jazz, percussion and strong rhythms keep the music down to earth, but the sound is somewhat muddy and the bells and vocals sometimes sound dated. PopMatters calls Wisdom Through Music and The Golden Lamp the pieces that save the record, thanks to their restraint and beautiful melodies.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to High Life and notice the rolling, festive drumming and the vocals, which together define the mood of the track.
