Thembi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

This seventh album by the saxophonist Pharoah Sanders was released in May 1971. It is dedicated to his South African wife Nomathemba, who was called Thembi; the word means faith and hope in Xhosa. Whereas his earlier records contained long, intense pieces, he now chose shorter tracks. The recordings took place in Los Angeles in November 1970 and in New York in January 1971.

He plays tenor and soprano saxophone, alto flute, koto, balafon and a cowhorn. Pianist Lonnie Liston Smith worked with him for the last time here. In Los Angeles, Smith touched a Fender Rhodes for the first time, and that is how Astral Traveling came about. Love is a solo piece for bass by Cecil McBee. According to AllMusic, the record shows many different sides of Sanders, even if it is less clear-cut than other work from that period.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Love and notice how Cecil McBee plays alone on the double bass, with slapping sounds on the wood and clear harmonics.
