Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul · Otis Redding had been signed by Stax Records in 1962 after the label heard him sing at an audition. His third album was released in 1965 on Volt, a subsidiary of Stax. On 9 and 10 July he recorded it, with one exception in less than twenty-four hours, at the Stax studio in Memphis, with the house band Booker T. & the M.G.'s, a horn section and Isaac Hayes on piano.

Most of the material consists of covers, including three songs by Sam Cooke, who had been shot dead a few months earlier, and three original songs. So you hear the singer in Respect, in A Change Is Gonna Come and in the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction, which he plays in his own way. Ole Man Trouble opens the record, and he co-wrote I've Been Loving You Too Long. Critics see the album as his first fully successful LP and as the benchmark for soul of that time.

Listening

Listening tip. In Respect, listen to the energy of the vocals and to the horns driving the song. Notice how the singer asks for respect with full conviction.
