Isaac Hayes
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Isaac Hayes was a writer and producer at the soul label Stax in Memphis. With David Porter he wrote hits such as Soul Man. In the late 1960s he became a star himself with long, orchestral soul songs. For the detective film Shaft (1971) he made a double album full of funk and soul. The title song begins with a wah-wah guitar and a lightning-fast hi-hat, followed by horns, strings and Hayes's spoken vocals. Theme from Shaft won the Oscar for best song. With it Hayes was the first African American to win an Oscar in a category outside acting. In 1974 he played the lead himself in Truck Turner, for which he also wrote the music.
