Black Moses

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Black Moses is a double album from 1971 on Enterprise, the Stax label, and the fifth studio album by Isaac Hayes. It came out after his successful Shaft. The title comes from the nickname given to him by the Stax director Dino Woodward. Hayes at first found it disrespectful, but later saw it as a symbol of black pride. The cover unfolds into a poster on which he appears as Black Moses.

There are many cover versions, such as Never Can Say Goodbye by the Jackson 5, which reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, and (They Long To Be) Close To You by The Carpenters. Hayes called it one of his most personal works. Ike's Rap II was widely sampled, by Portishead among others.
