Stax and Memphis soul
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Stax and Memphis soul · In Memphis, Jim Stewart started the label Satellite in 1957; his sister Estelle Axton joined a year later, and from 1961 it was called Stax (STewart + AXton). Recording was done live in an old cinema, and the sound was rawer and more southern than Motown: a heavy bass, dry drums and the Memphis Horns. The house band Booker T. & the MG's consisted of Black and white musicians.
Listening
Listening tip. Green Onions is a 12-bar blues in F: hear the repeated figure on the Hammond organ and the sharp guitar chords against it.
