Hammond organ and Leslie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Hammond organ and Leslie · In 1935 in Chicago, Laurens Hammond built an electric organ for churches that could not afford a pipe organ. Rotating discs, tonewheels, generate the notes, and with sliders, drawbars, you mix in the overtones. Don Leslie devised a speaker cabinet with rotating horns that gives the organ a floating, undulating sound. Jimmy Smith made the Hammond a jazz instrument, and Booker T. Jones the second lead sound of soul at Stax. In British rock, it sounded solemn, as in a church, or else distorted and hard.

Listening

Listening tip. Can you hear the floating and undulating of the organ? That is the rotating Leslie speaker.
