Presenting Isaac Hayes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Presenting Isaac Hayes · Presenting Isaac Hayes was in 1968 the first release on Enterprise, a new Stax label. He had been working for Stax for years as a songwriter, producer and session musician. To keep Al Bell happy he recorded an album as a jazz trio, together with Al Jackson Jr. and Donald Duck Dunn of Booker T. & the MGs. No material had been prepared, so the three improvised an album together. It has therefore been called a jam session on record.

Precious, Precious was recorded as a nineteen-minute piece and cut down to under three minutes for the single. Single and album did little commercially. He then had to make a new album, and that became Hot Buttered Soul. After that success, Atlantic reissued the record as In the Beginning. The Rolling Stone Album Guide calls it a bluesy after-hours jam session.

Listening

Listening tip. In Medley: I Just Want To Make Love To You/Rock Me Baby, listen to how piano, bass and drums, just the three of them, take up the space and follow one another.
