Pain in My Heart

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Pain in My Heart is Otis Redding's debut and contains recordings from 1962 and 1963. He recorded for Volt, a subsidiary of Stax in Memphis, and the album was released on 17 March 1964 on Atco. His first single, These Arms of Mine, came from a session in which he was actually just the driver of guitarist Johnny Jenkins. When the session finished early, he was allowed to sing two songs, and Stax signed him.

The title song was written by Allen Toussaint under the name Naomi Neville. It resembled a song by Irma Thomas so closely that copyright issues arose. There are also covers of Stand By Me, Louie Louie, Lucille and The Dog. The critic Rob Bowman heard in the title song how the singer uses his voice like a horn, swelling and growing soft. AllMusic gave four stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Pain In My Heart and notice how the voice swells and sinks away, and how the word heart is worked over again and again.
