The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads · This second album by Otis Redding was released in March 1965 and was his first for the new label Volt, a subsidiary of Stax. It was recorded at the Stax studio in Memphis, with Booker T. & the M.G.'s and the Memphis Horns as accompanists. Engineer Tom Dowd provided a stereo mix. As the title says, most of the twelve songs are soul ballads.
The album opens with That's How Strong My Love Is, which came out days after the original version by O. V. Wright and was covered shortly afterwards by the Rolling Stones. Mr. Pitiful was written by guitarist Steve Cropper together with the singer, in the car on the way to the studio, prompted by the nickname a disc jockey had given him. It became his first single in the top ten. The critical response was mixed: AllMusic gave three stars, the Rolling Stone Album Guide five.
