Change of the Century
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Change of the Century was released in May 1960 on Atlantic Records. The recording took place on 8 and 9 October 1959 in New York. The group consisted of Ornette Coleman on alto saxophone, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. On the sleeve the bandleader wrote that the record was the work of the whole group: beforehand nobody knows what the end result will be, and each player contributes what he feels at that moment.
That approach resonates in the music. The writer A. B. Spellman called the group disciplined, with an enormous mutual intuition. AllMusic wrote that the quartet grew ever more self-assured in its revolutionary approach. The record sold well shortly after its release.
