Ornette on Tenor
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Ornette on Tenor was released in 1962 on Atlantic Records and was the sixth and last album by Ornette Coleman for that label. Here he plays tenor saxophone instead of his usual alto saxophone. Bassist Jimmy Garrison plays, before he joined John Coltrane's quartet. The recording took place on 22 and 27 March 1961 at Atlantic Studios in New York.
It was the last record of the quartet that he had formed in the late 1950s. Later that year he continued with a trio. According to Harvey Pekar of Down Beat, most of the record consists of improvisation, with a few striking compositions. AllMusic found it his least spectacular record for Atlantic, but still far ahead of its time.
