On the Beach
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
After the enormous success of Harvest, Neil Young deliberately chose what he called the ditch: a rougher road with more interesting people. On the Beach is the second part of his Ditch Trilogy and was recorded after Tonight's the Night but released earlier. The July 1974 album expressed feelings of overexposure, alienation and wistfulness. The recording was sloppy, with session musicians swapping instruments, and Young opted for raw mixes.
It is a folk rock record about anger, alienation and cautious optimism. Walk On opens with the wish to carry on. Revolution Blues was inspired by Charles Manson, whom Young had met shortly before. Motion Pictures is a farewell to his relationship with the actress Carrie Snodgress, and Ambulance Blues closes the album. Sales were disappointing and Rolling Stone called it one of the most despairing albums of the decade. Later it was held in high regard.
