Harvest

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Harvest · After After the Gold Rush and the tour with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young withdrew to his new ranch in California at the end of 1970. There he injured his back, which meant he could no longer stand during performances and played mainly acoustically. An appearance on The Johnny Cash Show led to a collaboration with producer Elliot Mazer and Nashville session musicians, whom he called the Stray Gators. He recorded most of the album wearing a back brace.

On two songs the London Symphony Orchestra plays, and guests such as David Crosby, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills and James Taylor sing along. Old Man is about the ranch's caretaker. Heart of Gold became his only number one in the United States. It was the best-selling album in America in 1972. The success overwhelmed the singer, who would rather have stepped out of the spotlight.

Listening

Listening tip. In Old Man, listen to the lyrics: they are about the old man who came with the ranch when he bought it.
