After the Gold Rush

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Young lived in Topanga Canyon, an artists' community in Southern California, and recorded the album largely in his own studio at home. For months he struggled with writer's block, until the actor Dean Stockwell let him read a screenplay with the same title. It was about an ecological disaster that washes away the hippie community. According to Stockwell, Young then wrote the songs in three weeks. The film never materialised, and only After the Gold Rush and Cripple Creek Ferry really have anything to do with it. Players from Crazy Horse and from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young took part, and Nils Lofgren was heard for the first time.

The album consists mostly of country folk, with a few rock songs such as Southern Man. The first reactions were mixed. Later it earned a place on many lists of the best albums of all time. In 2014 it went into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to After the Gold Rush and notice the lyrics, which are based on a dream about a future in which humanity flees into space after the environmental disaster.
