Neil Young

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After the break-up of Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young made his first solo record in 1968. His manager Elliot Roberts arranged a contract with Reprise, and David Briggs became his producer for the first time. Briggs would produce almost all of his albums. The songs were recorded between August and October 1968 in various studios in Los Angeles, largely by laying down the instruments one by one. He later turned away from that approach.

The songs come from different times. The Old Laughing Lady was written three years earlier, on napkins in a coffee house. The Loner is a guitar-driven rock song that points ahead to his next album. The Emperor of Wyoming and String Quartet from Whiskey Boot Hill are instrumentals. The record was released in November 1968 and did not make the Billboard 200.
