Tonight’s the Night

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Tonight’s the Night · This record is a direct expression of grief. In the months before the songs came about, Danny Whitten, guitarist of Crazy Horse, and Neil Young's friend and roadie Bruce Berry had both died of an overdose. The recording took place in August and September 1973, mostly on 26 August. The band was called the Santa Monica Flyers: Young, Ben Keith, Nils Lofgren and the rhythm section of Crazy Horse. It was the first time the surviving members of Crazy Horse had played together since Whitten's death.

The title song mentions Berry by name. Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown comes from a 1970 concert and features Whitten's guitar and vocal work. The album was not released until June 1975 and is the third record of the so-called Ditch Trilogy, which followed the success of Harvest.
