American Stars ’n Bars

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

American Stars ’n Bars · This 1977 album was assembled from recordings spread over 29 months. After Zuma and a tour with Crazy Horse, Neil Young worked with Stephen Stills again. In April 1977 he recorded a number of country rock songs for the first side. For the second side he drew on older material from sessions of 1974 to 1976. Homegrown and Star of Bethlehem were intended for an album that was shelved. On Star of Bethlehem, Emmylou Harris sings along.

The best-known song is Like a Hurricane, about a stormy love affair, which he wrote on an electric organ and a string synthesizer. Bite the Bullet combines outlaw country with punk, and Homegrown is a light-hearted ode to marijuana. The album reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold.
