That Stubborn Kinda’ Fellow

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

That Stubborn Kinda’ Fellow · After his first album, a mixture of jazz and blues that failed to catch on, Marvin Gaye and Motown had to decide afresh which direction his career should take. The success of The Marvelettes with Please Mr. Postman and of the song Beechwood 4-5789, which he co-wrote, convinced him to try a younger R&B sound. Together with Mickey Stevenson he wrote new songs.

The record was released in December 1962 on Tamla and, like many Motown albums of the time, was made quickly. The house band, later known as the Funk Brothers, played the music; Martha and the Vandellas sang the backing vocals. R&B, blues, doo-wop and early soul run together. Stubborn Kind of Fellow became his first hit single, Pride and Joy his first pop top ten. The album brought Gaye into the circle of Motown's hitmakers and later became beloved of British mods and Northern Soul fans.

Listening

Listening tip. In Pride and Joy, listen to the backing vocals that answer the lead vocal.
