Hello Broadway
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hello Broadway is Marvin Gaye's fourth studio album and was released in 1964. It consists of standards and numbers from Broadway musicals. In those years Gaye was growing into Motown's most important male solo star.
The record shows that he himself would rather have been a crooner in the style of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra than the R&B hitmaker that Motown wanted him to be. The label's management wanted him to target a young R&B audience, not an adult one. Gene Page made the arrangements. This places the album in a series in which Gaye still strongly imitates Cole's voice. It would be years before he made a standards album that was more his own. A comparable record by another Motown group is On Broadway by the Four Tops.
