Quartet/Quintet/Sextet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Quartet/Quintet/Sextet was released in 1957 on Blue Note, but the recordings are older: they date from 20 June and 19 November 1952 and 22 August 1954. The quartet consists of Lou Donaldson with Horace Silver, Gene Ramey and Art Taylor. In the quintet the trumpeter Blue Mitchell is added. The sextet has a new line-up with Kenny Dorham, Matthew Gee, Elmo Hope, Percy Heath and Art Blakey.

The sessions had previously appeared on New Faces, New Sounds and on Lou Donaldson Sextet, Volume 2. The producer was Alfred Lion and Rudy Van Gelder recorded the 1954 session. AllMusic heard in Donaldson a player whose tone was not yet as full as it later became, but with fluent technique and fine phrasing, within bop and hard bop.
