Turn Me Loose
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Turn Me Loose · For her fifth album, Ledisi suffered from writer's block. She found the way out by listening to Them Changes by Buddy Miles from 1970. The album was released on 18 August 2009 by Verve Records. Unlike her earlier work, which leaned towards jazz and soul, it sounds decidedly funky. For the production she brought in Raphael Saadiq, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and James Big Jim Wright, and she again worked with Rex Rideout, who had also steered the previous album, Lost & Found.
The title says what it is about: she did not want to be put in a box. Rock, blues, classic soul, funk and hip hop run into one another. As a tribute to Buddy Miles, she also recorded Them Changes herself, as a bonus track. The reviews were generally favourable, and the album received two Grammy nominations, including for Best R&B Album.
