Born This Way
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Born This Way · After The Fame in 2008 and The Fame Monster in 2009, Lady Gaga worked on a third step in her career. She wrote and recorded the album during the Monster Ball Tour, partly on tour buses and in studios from London to Sydney. Fernando Garibay and RedOne helped as producers, and Brian May of Queen and the saxophonist Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band played on it. The producer RedOne called it her freedom album.
Born This Way builds on synth-pop and dance, but adds rock, heavy metal, disco and house. The lyrics deal with sexuality, religion, freedom, feminism and individuality. Religious and conservative commentators were divided, but most critics were positive about the musical variety and the vocals. The title song spent six weeks at number one in the United States. In 2020 Rolling Stone included the record in its list of the five hundred best albums.
