ARTPOP

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

ARTPOP · Lady Gaga began this third album in 2011, shortly after Born This Way. She worked on it during the Born This Way Ball and during her recovery from hip surgery in 2013. She collaborated with, among others, DJ White Shadow, Zedd and Madeon, and the artist Jeff Koons joined the project in 2013. Where Born This Way, in her view, had shown maturity, this album was meant to be more playful and freer.

The album sounds like EDM and synth-pop, with influences from R&B, techno, industrial and dubstep. The lyrics deal with fame, sex and self-determination, with references to Greek and Roman mythology. She wanted the album to sound like a night at the club, with tracks that flow into one another. The first single, Applause, was a success. The reviews were mixed, but later many critics took a more positive view.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Applause to the danceable electronic foundation, and notice how the vocals engage with the theme of audience and fame.
