Joanne

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Joanne is Lady Gaga's fourth solo album, released on 21 October 2016. After the mixed reception of Artpop and the jazz duets with Tony Bennett, she chose a more subdued sound: dance-pop, soft rock and Americana with country influences, with an emphasis on her voice. Mark Ronson, BloodPop and she herself produced. With Ronson she worked for six months at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La studio in Malibu, and on the first day they wrote Joanne. The song is named after her aunt Joanne Germanotta, whose death strongly influenced the record.

Josh Homme plays guitar on John Wayne, Beck collaborated on Dancin' in Circles and Florence Welch sings on Hey Girl. Perfect Illusion, Million Reasons and Joanne were released as singles. The critical response was largely favourable, although some found the album lacking in cohesion. The title song won a Grammy.
