From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Mark Ronson is a British-American musician, producer, songwriter and DJ, born in 1975. He signed with Elektra Records and in 2003 released his debut album Here Comes the Fuzz, with guests from American hip hop. Sales were disappointing and he left the label, after which he founded his own label, Allido Records. In 2006 he became known for his production work for Lily Allen, Christina Aguilera and Amy Winehouse.
Music and breakthrough
In 2007 he signed with Columbia Records and released Version, an album of covers in Motown-funk style. It featured Stop Me with Daniel Merriweather and Valerie with Amy Winehouse, both of which reached number two in the British chart. The album earned him a Brit Award. For Winehouse's album Back to Black he received a Grammy as producer of the year. His greatest international success was Uptown Funk from 2014, with Bruno Mars, the first single from Uptown Special from 2015. He dedicated that album to Winehouse. In 2018 he founded the label Zelig Records and, with Diplo, formed the duo Silk City, which won a Grammy with Electricity and Dua Lipa. He also won an Oscar for writing Shallow for the film A Star Is Born.
Influence
Ronson's sound brings old soul, funk and Motown back into modern pop, with live instruments and retro production technique. In doing so he gave singers such as Winehouse a contemporary classic sound.
