Back to Black
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Back to Black · After her jazzy debut Frank, Amy Winehouse wrote this second album out of heartbreak. Her boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil temporarily left her for an ex, and she wrote most of the songs in that period, about guilt, grief and broken hearts. She loved the pop and soul of the 1960s girl groups. In 2005 and 2006 she recorded with producers Salaam Remi in Miami and Mark Ronson in New York, together with the Dap-Kings, Sharon Jones's band. This produced a sound from the past, blended with contemporary R&B and neo-soul.
Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Back to Black, Tears Dry on Their Own and Love Is a Losing Game were released as singles. Critics praised the songwriting, the sensitive singing and the production. The album won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album and is regarded as a key record in the popularity of British soul in the late 2000s.
