Wish

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wish is saxophonist Joshua Redman's second studio album and was released in 1993 on Warner Bros. Records. He plays tenor saxophone, together with guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins. He said he wanted to work with them because they are masters and great storytellers. He was pleased with the result because of the clear shared identity and the organic unity.

Because Haden and Higgins played in Ornette Coleman's quartet, the record could have been avant-garde, but according to the AllMusic reviewer it is above all a post-bop album. He praised the jazz treatments of rock and rhythm and blues: Stevie Wonder's Make Sure You're Sure becomes a sombre jazz-noir mood, and Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven changes from pop and rock into pop jazz. The album reached number 1 on the Billboard jazz albums chart.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tears in Heaven, a song by Eric Clapton, and notice how the saxophone takes over the melody of a pop ballad and turns it into jazz.
