Freedom in the Groove
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Freedom in the Groove was released in 1996 as a studio album by the American jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman. He wrote and arranged all the pieces himself. He plays tenor, soprano and alto saxophone, with Peter Bernstein on electric guitar, Peter Martin on piano, Chris Thomas on acoustic bass and Brian Blade on drums.
The album shows a different side of Redman. He let go of the traditional hard bop that characterised his earlier records and sought a connection with hip hop and urban dance rhythms. Leo Stanley of AllMusic found this engaging at times: where Redman played supple, appealing lines over the soft, sustained rhythms, the fusion worked. Too often, in his view, the record sounded forced and stiff. Even so, he felt that jazz and hip hop need a musician of Redman's calibre to be credible.
