Timeless Tales (For Changing Times)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Timeless Tales (For Changing Times), from 1998, is saxophonist Joshua Redman's sixth album for Warner Bros. Many of the pieces are a tribute to the composers behind the title, from Gershwin and Kern to Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Cole Porter, Lennon and McCartney, and Prince. Between the songs are seven short Interludes that Redman wrote himself.

He plays tenor saxophone, with Brad Mehldau on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass and Brian Blade on drums. JazzTimes praised the band: Blade and Mehldau keep Redman out of sentimentality on I Had a King, and on one of the pieces Mehldau plays like a jazzy Glenn Gould. The Buffalo News called it a clever, pleasant standards record by a younger player who had done better before.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Times They Are a-Changin' and notice Brian Blade's cymbal and snare work and Brad Mehldau's piano.
