Englabörn
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Englabörn is the first full studio album by the Icelandic musician Jóhann Jóhannsson, released in 2002 by Touch Music. He wrote the music for a play by Hávar Sigurjónsson. It was performed by a string quartet, percussionists and the composer himself, who plays several instruments, including piano, organ, harmonium and glockenspiel.
The album consists mainly of short pieces in which classical, ambient and electronic influences come together. It received glowing attention: Pitchfork gave it an 8.9 on release. A 2018 reissue on Deutsche Grammophon also contains reworks by other musicians, such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Hildur Guðnadóttir.
